An appendix to USA Today’s money section

USA Today has a great article about blip on the front page of today’s Money section.  Among other things, the article explains how blip is different than other video services — and it highlights a number of fantastic shows that make blip their home.

There are two quick notes I wanted to make about the USA Today piece.

First, the story somewhat understates our traffic because it relies on the third-party measurement service Quantcast.  Quantcast reports that we reach 13.2 million viewers and do about 32 million video views, but it only counts about half of our traffic so far (this is due to a number of factors, including the difficulty in tracking iTunes downloads).  The actual numbers are roughly double that.  We are working with audience measurement companies like Quantcast and ComScore to properly recognize that traffic.

Second, I think it’s easy to read the article and think that making money with blip is easy.  It’s not.  We’re very proud that DavidJr has pulled in almost $40,000 from us and that we sent a roughly $26,000 check to the folks at Nostalgia Critic.  We’ve sent a lot of money to a lot of other people, too.  All of it earned from advertisers in exchange for hard work, dedication and a little bit of luck.

Remember that there’s no such thing as easy money.  Blip is not a get rich quick scheme.  DavidJr and Channel Awesome (the producers of Nostalgia Critic) have been working for years to get to the point where they’re getting five figure checks from blip.  And the money is still unreliable.  Some months are good, some months are less good.

We have never released information on how much individual shows have made in partnership with blip.  This is the first time this information is becoming public.  So now you know, in ballpark terms, what you can look forward to as a reward for your hard work and dedication.  But don’t get frustrated when the check doesn’t arrive tomorrow.  It takes time.  It takes effort.  It takes, like it or not, a little bit of luck.
